Although it’s still not as mainstream, surfing has become quite popular in the Philippines over the past few years. Destinations such as La Union, CamSur (Camarines Sur) and Baler are among the local surfers’ paradise.
Still unknown by many is the Bagasbas, a beautiful, long stretch of surf spot facing the Pacific Ocean. Bagasbas beach is located at Daet, Camarines Norte.
It was last summer during our Calaguas trip when me and my friends went to Bagasbas for a sidetrip. As most of my trips have been lately, this again came to me as a beautiful surprise!
Being a beach lover myself, I couldn’t wait to get myself to check out the fine grey sand and feisty water of Bagasbas.
This sacred place for surfing is still untouched by commercialism. Most of the establishments such as surf lessons/board rental shops, eatery and accommodated are located across the road (sorry, I don’t have a photo of it).
Surf lessons and board rental costs around Php 400, if my memory serves me right. As I felt a bit restricted with the titanium in my spine, I opted to forgo surfing this time around.
My friends went for it while I, on the other hand, took the opportunity to capture the moment with the board ( 😉 ) before playing with the waves–boardless!
Even if I wasn’t able to really surf, I managed to get some fun filled playtime with the waves myself. Imagine my surprise when after walking for around 30 meters already, the water level was still knee deep!
The waves though was a different story. I guess even if one is not surfing, one must still wear the right clothes so as not to have their clothes untangled by the water. Not that it happened. 😀
All in all, Bagasbas is one of the perfect places to learn how to surf. The waves are good even with a not-so-deep water level and the beach is still free from commercialization. For now, it just needs to be savoured while it lasts.
Showers/Toilets & Baths are available at Php 20 as provided by the Inns/Resorts/Accommodation Rentals across the beach.
