Getting inspiration from my memories of Morocco: A view of Fes as seen from the Merenid Tombs
Last December, I stumbled upon a travel writing contest being held by Two Monkeys Travel Group. Looking at the mechanics and the list of prizes, I thought to myself that I should give it a shot. I mean, all I had to do was write a blog about the “awesome things to do” on one of the places that I’ve visited. So, why not?
The thing is, when it comes to writing/blogging, as much as I want to say that it’s a walk in a park, writing, for me, never is. I love to write and share my stories and I tell you, whenever I do it, I do it wholeheartedly. Which is why I need all the inspiration and focus in every single thing that I put up. And I need time. A lot of it!
As I tried to come up with what I should write about, all my thoughts directed me to Morocco. My whole trip there came as a surreal experience (my whole 2015 actually was!) and given that I was still in the phase of nostalgia, I just knew that THAT is the one. And so I wrote the “8 Awesome Things To Do In Morocco“. It was a very brief recap of the places to see in Morocco and I know that what I’ve written doesn’t do justice to the whole country and my whole experience there. All I could hope for was for the article to somehow inform and even inspire the readers with what the vibrant and exciting country has to offer.
One of the Awesome Things to do in Morocco: The Great Sahara Desert Trip
3 weeks in and I had no idea that the main criteria for determining the winner/s was the number of “shares.” On the last week, I was informed that I can still catch up until the 9th of January. Let me tell you a secret: I’m really shy when it comes to my writing. Most of my friends don’t even know that this blog exists. So, to actually share my write-up was kind of unusual. Well, that didn’t hurt and eventually everybody moved on.
A month later, they finally released the contest winners and guess what? I WON!!! Hard to explain but a part of me was surprised and yet another part of me somehow knew that I’d make the cut. Not that my writing was phenomenal (I know it’s not), but perhaps because Morocco actually is.
What’s even more surprising to me is the overwhelming response and attention that I got from my FB friends when I told them via a wall post. I am very grateful and truly humbled with the response. I just wasn’t really expecting it! It is probably the craziest I’ve received to date. Seriously.
To be able to know that some people actually read my stuff is rewarding enough for me. To inspire someone is even better. There’s so much that my heart could only hope for, and that just happened to be one of it. But to actually get something from it and even get noticed? Beyond words. That’s something that I’d probably never get used to.
I guess, at the end of the day, we should all just try and give it our best shot. You’ll never know ! 😉
